1960

Hit the ground ball that struck New York Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek in the throat and led indirectly to the Pittsburgh Pirates winning the 1960 World Series.

1974

Hired as the manager of the New York Yankees in 1974 and was the first man in over fifty years to never manage the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Yankee Stadium was undergoing renovations during Virdon's tenure and the Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium. He would be fired in July of 1975 and replaced by Billy Martin.
