Has been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award six times: in 1975, as Best Director (Dramatic), and, along with John Kani and Winston Ntshona, as authors of Best Play nominee "Sizwe Banzi is Dead and The Island;" in 1981 as author of Best Play nominee "A Lesson from Aloes;" in 1982 as Best Director (Play) and author of Best Play nominee "'Master Harold'... and the Boys;" and in 1986 as author of Best Play nominee "Blood Knot." He has yet to win.

2002

He was awarded the 2002 NAACP Theatre Award for Best Direction for "Sorrows and Rejoicings" at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

2010

His play, "Master Harold...and the Boys", at the TimeLine Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois was nominated for a 2010 Joseph Jefferson Award for Production of a Play (Midsize).
