Timeline

1920

Romanian-born playwright and screenwriter, in America from childhood. He was noted for his acidulous wit. A former journalist, Caesar was educated at Yale University and started writing acerbic comedy plays in the 1920's. He worked at Fox and Warners in the 1930's, but his output declined sharply by the end of the decade due to his brusque outspokenness which offended studio executives. The high point of his career in Hollywood was winning the Oscar for Best Original Story for Manhattan Melodrama (1934).
