Timeline

1842

Italian Novelist Antonio Fogazzaro was born in Vicenza, Italy, in 1842. His parents were opposed to the Austrian occupation of northern Italy, and their political activities came to the attention of the occupation authorities, forcing the family to flee into exile to southern Italy. As a young man he studied at the University of Padua and the University of Turin--where, after graduating, he practiced law--and after his father brought the family back from exile, he moved to Milan.

1905

Fogazzaro followed in his father's footsteps and continued his political activity, but when he got into trouble it wasn't with the Austrians but with the Catholic Church--in 1905 he published his novel "Il Santo" ("The Saint"), which was termed "heretical" by the church and ran into censorship problems across the country. His most famous work was the "trilogy" of novels written about the "Risorgimento", or the struggle against the Austrians in northern Italy known as the "War of Liberation".
