Anne Meara was the only child of Edward Joseph Meara (1893-1980) and Mary (nee Dempsey) Meara (1894-1941). Mary Meara committed suicide when her daughter was 12 years old.

1948

The incredibly gifted comedienne-actress Anne Meara is known for her comedic efforts alongside husband-comedian, Jerry Stiller; together, they were 'Stiller and Meara'; they were original members of the improvisational company, the Compass Players, which later evolved as the Second City Theater. They gained popularity with their skits on The Ed Sullivan Show (1948), but the act dissolved following the demise of variety television.

1955

Won an Obie Award for the 1955 off-Broadway production "Mädchen in Uniform".

1960

Half of the mixed marriage (Jewish/Irish) comedy team of Stiller and Meara active during the 1960s and 1970s, with Jerry Stiller.

1974

Meara went on to offer her talents to a variety of television roles, notably the Golden Globe-winning Sally Gallagher in Rhoda (1974), and Veronica Rooney, an outspoken Irish cook in the hit sitcom A. R. C. H. I. E.

1993

Was nominated for Broadway's 1993 Tony Award as Best Actress (Featured Role - Play) for a revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie".
