1950

He was an actor, known for The Mudlark (1950), Woman in a Dressing Gown (1957) and Tales of the Unexpected (1979). He was married to Susan Burnet.

1959

Married Rhodesian-born wife, Susan Burnet, an actress, in 1959 over the objections of his father. The couple separated in 1970 but never divorced and remained on friendly terms. They had a son and a daughter.

1965

Washed up in films at age 26, he tried to kill himself in 1965 but recovered and returned to the theater two years later where he received critical applause for his work in "Howards End."

1976

An avid mediator and outspoken political liberal, he caused an uproar in Southern Rhodesia in 1976, where he was appearing in "An Inspector Calls" with John Le Mesurier, Kenneth Baker and David Wilkinson, and his statements promoting racial equality to the black stage crew working on the production resulted in him being sacked, unless he apologised for his statements. He would not. A few years later Southern Rhodesia achieved independence and became Zimbabwe.

2003

A memorial service was held for him at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden on 28th November 2003.
