Has won four Tony Awards as Best Costume Designer: in 1982 for "Nine;" in 1992 for "Crazy for You;" in 2001 for "The Producers, the new Mel Brooks musical;" and in 2003 for "Hairspray." He has also been nominated four other times in the same category: in 1989 for "Lend Me a Tenor;" in 1997 for "Chicago;" in 1998 for "Cabaret;" and in 2000 for "The Music Man."
He was nominated for a 1998 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Costume Designer of 1997 for Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre.
He was awarded the 2009 Back Stage Garland Award for Costume Design for "9 to 5: The Musical," at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
He serves as Production Designer for North Carolina's oldest running seasonal outdoor drama, The Lost Colony, which was the 2013 recipient of the Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre.

(2015) The Producers (2005), The Cutting Edge (1992) and Life with Mikey For his design work for the stage, he was recently nominated for his 15th Tony Award for On the Twentieth Century. He is currently represented on Broadway with Chicago, now in its 20th year! He also serves as Chairman of the Board for The American Theatre Wing.
He returned in 2015 for his 45th season with the production. Mr. Long holds honorary degrees from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The University of North Carolina at Asheville, and The College of William and Mary.
