Scherrer was born in Syracuse, New York and grew up in Skaneateles, New York.

He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

1991

He played for the American team in the 1991 Walker Cup.

1992

He lost to Justin Leonard in the finals of the 1992 U.S. Amateur.

Scherrer turned professional in 1992, and has spent a relatively equal amount of time on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour.
