Signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1946 out of Indiana University. Played for the Reds (1947-1957), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1958-1959), the Chicago White Sox (1959-1960), and the Los Angeles Angels (1961). NL All-Star (1953-1956).

Led National League first basemen in fielding percentage, 1951-1955.
