Timeline

1892

English author Richard Aldington was born in Hampshire, England, in 1892. He was educated at Dover College and the University of London.

1913

Determined from an early age to be a writer, in 1913 he became literary editor of a magazine called 'The Egoist". In that same year he married Hilda Doolittle, an American poet, but the marriage didn't last long and they eventually divorced.

1916

In 1916, at the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted in the British army as a private, serving in an infantry division in France, and was later promoted to officer. He survived the war but with a severe case of "shell shock"--what is now called PTSD--and broke. He got work as a literary reviewer for "The London Times", but his shell shock was so severe he only lasted a few months and his doctors ordered him to take a extended stay in the country, away from frenetic pace of city life.

1919

It took him almost a year, but in 1919 he was well enough to return to writing. He traveled around Europe, living in France, Italy and Switzerland among other places, and eventually wound up in the US.
