Timeline
Prince Ernst August of Hanover is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth (her 7th great-grandfather, Georg, Kurfürst von Hannover, was crowned George I of Great Britain in 1714). Queen Elizabeth issued a Declaration in Council in 1999, granting Ernst permission to marry Caroline, pursuant to the British Royal Marriages Act 1772. Without the Royal Assent, the marriage would have been void in Britain where Ernst's family owns property, and his lawful descendants remain in succession to both the British crown and the suspended peerages of the Dukedom of Cumberland and Teviotdale, and the Earldom of Armagh. In order for Caroline to retain her claim to the throne of Monaco and to transmit succession rights to future offspring, she and Ernst were obliged to obtain the approval of France, as per the since-defunct Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1918, and of her father, in his capacity as the sovereign of Monaco.
