She is a theoretical physicist who works on dark matter, neutrino physics, and other topics in particle and astroparticle theory.

Bell is President of the Australian Institute of Physics.

In 2011, she became a Chief Investigator of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Terascale, and in 2020, the Theory Program leader of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics.

In 2021 Bell was elected Vice President of the Australian Institute of Physics.
