He was born in Lins suburbs and grew up in the slum of Mangueira, Rio de Janeiro. He won the "Mussum" nickname from friend Grande Otelo, when he was still a musician. In 1969, Chico Anysio took him to work in his TV Tupi show, Escolinha do Professor Raimundo (1990). With the musical group "Os Originais do Samba", he recorded 12 albums, and had several radio hits, including "Assassinaram o Camarao".

He is best remembered for his work in the famous comedy troupe Os Trapalhões (1969-1994), which he joined in 1976.

In 1981, he left the group to dedicate exclusively to his acting career.
