The daughter of a jeweler, Mildred Barish graduated from Barnard College in 1933, majoring in English, participating in a number of on-campus activities including writing in college publications. She soon went west, writing screenplays for Universal and Paramount Pictures, and subsequently worked for the Los Angeles "Times", and "Look" magazine.
