Noted pianist, bandleader and ragtime composer of standards ("Junk Man Rag", "Pork and Beans Rag"). Also contributed music for fourteen stage shows in New York prior to and following World War I. He later led a successful society band in the 1920's. Roberts also variously performed on radio and in vaudeville. He is considered one of the originators of the 'stride school' of jazz piano.
