The Feferman–Schütte ordinal, which he showed to be the precise ordinal bound for predicativity, is named after him.

He was the doctoral advisor of 16 students, including Wolfgang Bibel, Wolfgang Maaß, Wolfram Pohlers, and Martin Wirsing.
