Served in The Education Corps, World War II. Studied music with Egon Wellesz and Roy Harris. Began serious composition, 1946. His incidental music for the Oxford University Dramatic Society's productions in 1947 led to Muir Mathieson commissioning documentary scores from Veale for the Crown Film Unit. After film work dried up, Veale worked as film critic for the Oxford Mail, England (1965-1980) and as copy editor, Oxford University Press (1968-1987).
