He is the son of Audrey Ruth (Meyer) and Forrest Mars, Sr., and grandson of Frank C. Mars, founders of the American candy company Mars, Incorporated.

Mars graduated from the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut in 1953 and Yale University.
