Through his mother, John Donne was a distant cousin of Sir Thomas More, who was executed by Henry VIII in 1535 and later canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.

1601

In 1601 he eloped with Anne More, the 17-year-old niece of his employer, Sir Thomas Egerton. Donne was promptly arrested and imprisoned for marrying a minor without the consent of her guardians. He wrote his young bride a letter from prison, saying, "John Donne, Anne Donne, Undone.".

1603

John Donne and his wife Anne had twelve children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. They were: Constance Donne, born 1603; John Donne III, born 1604; George Donne, born 1605; Francis Donne, born 1607 and died 1614; Lucy Donne, born 1608; Bridget Donne, born 1609; Mary Donne, born 1611 and died 1614; Nicholas Donne, born 1613 and died 1614; Margaret Donne, born 1615; Elizabeth Donne, born 1616. Their eighth child was stillborn in 1612, and Anne More Donne died bearing their twelfth child, also stillborn, in 1617.
