Joey Canoy

Following his TKO victory over Ryan Makiputin, Canoy once against moved to the light flyweight division to face against veteran Japanese boxer Kenichi Horikawa who compiled a record 41–17–1 for the vacant OPBF light flyweight title, after continuous losses of Filipino boxers to the Japanese, it is obvious that Filipino boxing fans wanted vengeance, Canoy would succeed on doing so as he puts his first and only yet Japanese victim down as he stops Horikawa after he lands a perfect left uppercut en route to a 7th-round TKO, snatching the vacant OPBF belt.

Prior to defeating Horikawa, on July 12, 2023, Canoy fought compatriot Clyde Azarcon in the Mini flyweight division Where he won via 4th-round TKO.

On April 9, 2024, Canoy was scheduled to square off with Olympian and two-time WBC International champion, Alex Winwood in Winwood's hometown of Australia on May 25, 2024, their bout serves as a WBC Mini flyweight world title eliminator.

Joey Maderal Canoy (born June 27, 1993) is a Filipino boxer who held the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Mini flyweight and OPBF Light flyweight titles and has been challenged one time for the IBO light flyweight title and two times for the IBO Mini flyweight title and once for WBO Oriental Mini flyweight title.

Although very little is known about his amateur career BoxRec has a record of his amateur highlights, he is the Pinweight gold medalist in PLDT-ABAP National Boxing Championships in Panabo, Davao del Norte for the Mindanao Qualifiers in 2011, also Pinweight Gold Medalist in Philippine National Games in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental in 2012, in the same year, Canoy fought in the PLDT-ABAP National Boxing Championships Elite Men Light flyweight, winning against Rafael Sueno in the prelims, however lost against Junuel Lacar in the Quarter-finals.

Joey Canoy who aged 19 years old, made his debut against compatriot journeyman Garry Rojo at the mini flyweight division and won decisively via unanimous decision with the scores of 40–35 twice and 40–34 once.

Canoy composed a record of 4–0 with 3 knockouts before fighting compatriot tough subsequent Philippines GAB flyweight champion and OPBF flyweight title challenger, Felipe Cagubcob Jr., who at the time, had a record of 1–1–3, the two fighters battled each other at the Mini flyweight division and faced on Barangay Namayan Basketball Arena on January 11, 2014, where their bour ended in a split draw, Canoy would pursue his career and defeated Mark Anthony Florida via 8th round unanimous decision win.

After compiling a record of 8–0–1 he fought his most challenging opponent yet, with an experienced record of 16–5–2, Jerry Tomogdan battled with Canoy for the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) mini flyweight title, whereas Tomogdan gave Canoy his first loss via majority decision.

Canoy was expecting to have a grudge rematch against Tomogdan on August 23, 2015, however, Canoy would instead fight a different opponent and won the vacant Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) mini flyweight title against journeyman Rodel Tejares on August 23, 2015, via 8th round technical-knockout.

After defeating journeymen Jonathan Ricablanca and Rodel Tejares to compose a record of 10–1–1, Canoy fought his next most challenging bout against subsequent WBO Oriental and Philippines GAB Light flyweight champion, Jesse Espinas, Canoy's ABF title was at stake and Espinas stole the title after defeating Canoy via 5th round technical-knockout, January 12, 2016.

Following his loss against Espinas, Canoy squared off with Fabio Marfa and won via 4th-round TKO, on September 3, 2016, Canoy would square off with the then undefeated subsequent two-time world title challenger Toto Landero at Jurado Hall of the Philippine Marine Corp. in Taguig, after knocking down Landero two times and earning a stoppage, Canoy would make Landero suffer his first ever loss.

On February 4, 2017, after compiling a record of 12–2–1, Canoy was given a world title shot for the vacant less-major IBO world title in the light flyweight division at Emperors Palace in South Africa against former unified mini flyweight South African champion Hekkie Budler, with only one being able to capture the IBO crown, despite being a minor belt, the IBO is important for each's career to rise up the rankings, unfortunately for Canoy, Budler would notch a stoppage and was the one to be crowned the new IBO champion with a 7th round RTD victory over Canoy.

Both Joey Canoy and his next opponent, compatriot and subsequent two-time world champion Melvin Jerusalem came from a loss in a world title shot (Canoy against Budler for the IBO light flyweight title and Jerusalem against Wanheng Menayothin for the WBC mini flyweight title), the two squared off on July 8, 2017, in Cebu City, settling in a non-titled bout in the undercard of "Pinoy Pride 41", Canoy would win via unanimous decision.

Canoy was again to fight for the IBO crown, now at mini-flyweight division against reigning and defending IBO champ Simphiwe Khonco on his fourth title defense, The fight abruptly ended in the fourth round after a clashing of heads that left Khonco unfit to continue, bout was then declared a no contest.

Khonco subsequently refused a rematch, stating: "We took this fight on our own but now we are moving forward."

Canoy would get another shot at the IBO mini flyweight crown, now vacant, against Nkosinathi Joyi, Canoy would try to get a knockout win, stating: "I had no problem making weight, I know I'm fighting on enemy's turf so i can not let this end at the judges' hands."

after the weigh-in, however, Canoy would be outpointed decisively with a unanimous decision loss.

Canoy would win via corner retirement against Jovab Lucas on his return to the light flyweight division.

On May 21, 2021, at East London, South Africa, Canoy would square off with promising South African prospect Nhlanhla Tyirha for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental light flyweight title, Canoy would again be outpointed.

Following the decision victory against Michael Camelion, Canoy would move back down to the mini flyweight division, where he would immediately battle with subsequent supposed world title-challenger, Rhenrob Andales or more known as ArAr Andales (13–2) in Rizal, Laguna on April 9, 2022, for Andales' WBO Oriental mini flyweight title, the fight would end in a majority decision draw, therefore Andales retains his WBO Oriental belt.
