Jan Hemelrijk (28 May 1918 – 16 March 2005) was a Dutch mathematician, Professor of Statistics at the University of Amsterdam, and authority in the field of stochastic processes.

1950

Hemelrijk received his PhD in 1950 at the University of Amsterdam with a thesis entitled "Symmetry Keys and other applications of the theory of Neyman and Pearson" under supervision of David van Dantzig.

After graduation Hemelrijk started his academic career as assistant to David van Dantzig at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam, and later Head of the Statistical Consulting Department.

1952

He was Professor at the Delft University of Technology from 1952 to 1960.

1960

In 1960, he was appointed Professor of Statistics at the University of Amsterdam as successor of David van Dantzig.

Jaap Wessels in 1960 started his academic career Wessels as assistant to Jan Hemelrijk.

Hemelrijk was President of the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research, and chief editor of the Journal of the association Statistica Neerlandica.

1963

In 1963, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
