James Bond was born on January 4, 1900 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was married to Mary Wickham Porcher Lewis Bond.

1952

Author of an ornithological book named "Birds of the West Indies". In 1952, when Ian Fleming started writing his first James Bond novel, he was searching for a name for the hero of his book. He then saw that book in his bookshelf, and decided to use the author's name, "James Bond".

1954

In 1954, he was awarded the Brewster Medal of the American Ornithologists Union.

1960

He didn't know that his name had been used as the name of the secret agent in 'Ian Fleming"'s novels until the early 1960s when he read an interview with him in which Fleming explained how he came up with the name James Bond.

1961

His wife, Mary Bond, on her husband's behalf, wrote to Ian Fleming in 1961 regarding the use of her husband's name. Ian Fleming wrote back saying, "I must confess that your husband has every reason to sue me.... In return, I can only offer your James Bond unlimited use of the name Ian Fleming for any purpose he may think fit." He also wrote: "Perhaps one day your husband will discover a particularly horrible species of bird which he would like to christen in an insulting fashion by calling it Ian Fleming."

1966

His wife, Mary Bond, writing as Mrs. James Bond, wrote a book in 1966 entitled "How 007 Got His Name". The dust-jacket was designed in the style of the Ian Fleming hard-back James Bond novel covers. In 1980, as Mary Wickham Bond, she wrote "To James Bond With Love". She also wrote the ornithology tome "Far Afield In The Caribbean: Migratory Flights of a Naturalist's Wife" in 1971.

1975

In 1975, he was awarded the Leidy Medal of the Academy of Natural Sciences.
