Howard Wolpe was born on November 2, 1939 in Los Angeles, California, USA as Howard Eliot Wolpe III. He was married to Julianne Fletcher, Judith Artz Hollister and Celia Jeanene Taylor.

1978

He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. He represented the Third Congressional District in Southwestern Michigan from 1978 until his retirement in 1992. He was a chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Africa from 1982 to 1992. He lost his election bid for Governor of Michigan to incumbent John Engler in 1994.

1979

1986

He was the primary sponsor of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 which imposed sanctions against American companies doing business in South Africa. Among the conditions for lifting sanctions included releasing Nelson Mandela from prison. Apartheid in South Africa ended in 1994 and Mandela was released in 1990. Upon his release from prison, he called him to thank him for playing the role in passing the law.
