Born in Burnley, Barnes joined Leicester City at the age of nine before signing his first professional contract as well as making his first appearance for club both in 2016.

He had loan spells with Milton Keynes Dons, Barnsley and West Bromwich Albion.

He won the FA Cup and FA Community Shield with Leicester in 2021 before departing for Newcastle United in 2023.
