Giulio Andreotti was born on January 14, 1919 in Rome, Lazio, Italy. He was married to Livia Danese.

1954

In early 1954, Andreotti served as Premier Fanfani's Minister of the Interior. He was Minister of Finance from 1955 to 1958, Minister of the Treasury in 1958-1959, Minister of Defense in 1959-1960 and again from 1960 to 1966, and Minister of Industry and Commerce from 1966 until 1968, when he left the Cabinet to become the Christian Democrats' floor leader in the Chamber of Deputies.

1972

Has been prime minister of Italy seven times between 1972 and 1992. As he led the government for just 8 days in 1972, he still holds the record of shortest period in office.

1976

A member of Italy's dominant Christian Democratic party, he became Premier of Italy on July 30, 1976.

1979

Giulio Andreotti was tried in Perugia with Sicilian Mafia boss Gaetano Badalamenti, and others, on charges of complicity in the murder of journalist Carmine Pecorelli (assassinated in Rome on March 20, 1979). In 2003 Andreotti was acquitted, along with his co-defendants, by the Italian supreme court for not having committed the crime.

2004

Giulio Andreotti was tried in Palermo, accused of conspiracy with Sicilian Mafia. In 2004 he was convicted of criminal association until the spring of 1980, crime committed but expired by prescription, by the Italian supreme court.
