He began his newspaper work in St. Joseph, Missouri, and then worked in St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver and Chicago between 1883 and 1895. He was an early columnist for the newspaper 'Sharps & Flats' and the Chicago 'Morning News', and he also wrote poems for his columns.
