Ernst Deutsch was born on September 16, 1890 in Prague, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary as Ernest Dorian.

1914

German character actor, on stage from 1914 at the Wiener Volksbuehne. Had a distinguished theatrical career under Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. Appeared in German silent films, often playing intense, dramatic roles. As a Jew, he left Germany in 1933, moving to the U.S. in 1938 and attaining American citizenship a year later. Acted under the nom de plume Ernest Dorian in English-speaking films, returning to Germany in 1947. Active in character roles, latterly white-haired, during the 1950's and 60's.

1922

Deutsch married his childhood friend Anuschka Fuchsin in 1922. She was the daughter of the Prague industrialist Arthur Fuchs. Her cousin Herbert Fuchs of Robettin was married to the sister of writer Franz Werfel.

1933

Although his name couldn't be more "German" he was undesirable in his own country in the 30's because of his Jewish roots. He already left Germany in 1933 and played at theaters in Vienna and Prague as well as in Zurich and Brussels.

1936

During a theater tour in England he acted in the movie "The Marriage of Corbal" (1936).

1938

In 1938 he went to the USA where he got the American nationality one year later.

1946

After a stint in 1946 in Buenos Aires Ernst Deutsch returned in 1947 to Paris from where he went to Vienna. In Vienna he became a member of the Burgtheater.

1948

He was awarded the Best Actor award in 1948 in Venice for his performance in the film Der Prozeß.

1949

He was an actor, known for The Third Man (1949), Der Prozeß (1948) and Pique Dame (1918). He was married to Anuschka Fuchs.

1951

Ernst Deutsch returned to Vienna after the war, from 1951 he lived in Berlin.

1964

Won Honorary Award - 1964 for "For his continued outstanding individual contributions to the German film over the years.".

1973

In 1973, the former 'Junge Theater' of Friedrich Schütter in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst was renamed after him. Ernst Deutsch had staged a performance of Nathan The Wise here shortly before his death.
