Elmer Layden was born on May 4, 1903 in Davenport, Iowa, USA as Elmer Francis Layden.

1922

All-American fullback at Notre Dame, where he played from 1922 to 1924.

1931

He was an actor, known for The Spirit of Notre Dame (1931), The Ed Sullivan Show (1948) and We, the People (1948). He was married to Edith Davis.

1941

Resigned from Notre Dame in February of 1941 to assume the post of commissioner of the NFL. Served as commissioner from 1941 to 1945, when he resigned to start a business career in Chicago.

1947

Served as head football coach at Columbia College (1925-1926); Duquesne (1927-1933) and Notre Dame (1934-1940), where he also served as athletic director. Compiled a 47-13-3 record at Notre Dame and a 103-34-11 docket overall.

1951

Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as a charter member.

1983

Inducted into the Loras College Varsity Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983 (inaugural class).

1987
