Strong discussed his devotion to his athletes in his first press conference as the head coach of Texas, "I want to see [the players] develop on the field as well as off the field... The program is always going to be about physical and mental toughness."

In his first training camp as Longhorns coach, Strong suspended or dismissed a number of players for legal and disciplinary reasons.

Players went to training camp with blank white helmets and Strong said they would have to earn the right to have the Longhorn logo on them.
