Carl Kaysen was born on March 5, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was married to Ruth Butler and Annette Neutra.

1940

In 1940, he was employed in Washington D.C. as an economist for the Office of Strategic Forces for the United States in World War II. In 1941, he joined the United States Army Air Forces and went to London, England with other economists to determine effective targets to impair the German war effort.

1947

He earned a Master's Degree in 1947 and a doctorate in economics in 1954 both at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was an assistant professor and served as a law clerk for Judge Charles E. Wyzanski Jr. of the United States District Court.

1955

He received a Fulbright Scholarship and Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955. In 1954, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was named Chairman of the Academy's committee on International Security Studies in 1995. He was Chairman of the Federation of American Scientists in 1997.

1962

He counseled the President and administration officials during the Cuban Missile Crisis for 13 days in October 1962 at the White House in Washington D.C.

1963

He helped negotiate a nuclear test ban, "The Limited Test Ban Treaty," signed by the United States, Soviet Union, and Great Britain on August 5, 1963 prohibited tests of nuclear devices in the atmosphere, under water, and in outer space.

1976

He was a Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 34 years from 1976 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was director of the prestigious Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University from 1966 to 1976 in Princeton, New Jersey. He was also a professor at Harvard University from 1947 to 1966. He served two years as deputy national security adviser in the Kennedy administration at the White House in Washington D.C. from 1961 until 1963.
