Arthur Bliss was born on August 2, 1891 in London, England.

1940

Leading English composer of symphonies, ballets and choral works, trained under Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Began as a writer of avant garde pieces but became more conservative with his compositions during the 1940's. He was made Master of the Queen's Musick in 1953 after having been knighted three years earlier. Occasionally wrote for films.

1949

He is known for his work on Christopher Columbus (1949), Things to Come (1936) and Seven Days from Now (1957). He was married to Gertrude Hoffmann.

1950

He was made a Knight Bachelor in the 1950 King's Birthday Honours List, a Knight Commander of the Order of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1969 Queen's New Year Honours List; and a Companion of Honour in the 1971 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to music.
