Timeline

1918

Casella was a soldier in the Italian army during World War I. After having survived one particularly bloody battle, he began to wonder what would happen if Death were to suddenly quit his "job" and take a vacation. After the armistice was signed in 1918, Casella--who had been a writer before joining the army--began writing a play on that subject, which eventually became the classic work "Death Takes a Holiday".
