Whitwell was born in 1954 in York, Yorkshire.

1976

He competed in three Olympic Games in total, appearing in the 1976 Summer Olympics and 1984 Summer Olympics in addition to his medal winning 1980 Games.

1977

In 1977 he was part of the eight that reached the final and finished 5th, at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam.

1980

He was a member of the silver medal-winning British men's eight at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

1986

In 1986, he was in the World Championship winning in the lightweight double sculls with Carl Smith.

He represented England and won a bronze medal in the double sculls, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He is currently running an international sculling camp for scullers of any level from novice to international.

He also teaches at a school for children with special needs.
