Balter formed a writing partnership with William Read Woodfield during the production of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964). They wrote an early episode of Mission: Impossible (1966) and quickly got more work and were named script consultants. By the third season of M:I, they were elevated to producers but had conflicts with executive producer Bruce Geller.
