Became a U.S. citizen in 1941. Five days before the United States declared war on Germany, he secured visas for his parents, grandmother and aunt, rescuing them from a Pyrenees internment camp where his grandfather died.

1957

Co-authored two books, "Our Jewish Heritage" in 1957 and "Journey of Discovery: A Resource Manual for Catholic-Jewish Dialogue" in 1989, and edited the 1991 "Teaching About World Religions."

1987

Met with Pope John Paul II during the pope's 1987 visit to Los Angeles, and in 1969 helped launch the Inter-Religious Council of Southern California, which organized inter-religious services for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
