German actor, on stage from 1928, who fled the Nazis during the war years, only to portray Nazi menacers in British films.

1937

Owing to the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and his wife Tatjana being Jewish, he moved to Britain in 1937.

1939

He appeared on the London stage in 1939 in the comedy Rake's Progress (Not the later Rex Harrison film of the same title), but was largely acting in films (among them The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, 1943). He appeared in many cinema productions, and in the year 1940, he was credited in seven, in all of which he played the role of a German.

He was an actor, known for Frieda (1947), The Guns Of Navarone (1961) and Sleeping Car to Trieste (1948). He was married to Petra Peters, Susan Shaw, Valerie White and Tania Lieven.
