He was the first major American leader to advocate extending voting rights to women and wrote on the subject in 1836.

He first spoke out against slavery in 1837 to the Illinois state legislature.

On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, he attended the play 'Our American Cousin' at Ford's Theater.
